Emergency medical technician is the entry level of prehospital emergency medical provider. EMTs provide rapid in-field treatment and transport to higher medical providers. They work in conjunction with paramedics, nurses, physicians, and other members of the health care team. Career options are available in urban and rural settings, primarily in conjunction with fire departments, private ambulances, or other rescue services. When operating in the prehospital environment, EMTs act in accordance with protocols and procedures set by their system's physician medical director.
The 300 hour EMT Certification Program includes classroom instruction, hospital rotations with an emphasis on emergency department experience, and emergency ambulance experience. You'll receive instruction in basic life support, such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation, automated external defibrillation, physical assessment, bandaging and splinting, traction splinting, spinal immobilization, airway management, oxygen therapy, and other noninvasive procedures. EMT Admission Requirements
- Provide a valid State ID card or Driver’s License
- Be at least 18 years of age by Graduation
- Be financially capable of covering the cost of the course
- Provide a copy of a High School Diploma, G.E.D. or College Transcript
- Be free of any felony convictions
- Be, and remain, drug and substance abuse free
- Be Florida EMT-Basic certified by the end of Phase-1 (Medic students ONLY)
- Be able to obtain and/or provide proof of the following:
- AHA HCP CPR that must remain current throughout entire course (available at the School for $55 (not included in Tuition)
- Up-to-date Shot Record showing: MMR, Hep-B, Varicella, PPD/TB, Tetanus and FLU vaccines. (Refer to Vaccination and Medical Testing Requirements Form provided at Orientation)
- Solid black, closed-toed boots, watch with a second hand or easily read digital readout, stethoscope, safety glasses, and Trauma shears (not included in the Tuition)
- Submit a statement (on the School approved form) signed by a Physician proclaiming you are of sufficient health to participate in the chosen course and are free of any communicable diseases
- Ability to comply with the requirements for EMS personnel set forth in the Americans with Disabilities Act
- Able to participate in clinical rotations at various hours/days
- Participate in a screening interview
- Read, sign and submit all applicable paperwork
